Data Formats and Delivery

How Industry Economics Worldwide data is delivered and what file formats are available.

How can I access the data online?

All Industry Economics Worldwide plans include access to Online Charts — an interactive browser-based interface for exploring utilities costs, construction cost indexes, and plant location factors across countries.

Within Online Charts, you can choose from four view types:

  • Historical — time series of past data
  • Forecast — forward-looking projections
  • Comparative Map — geographic comparison across countries displayed on a map
  • Comparative Chart — side-by-side country comparison in a chart format

All views support currency and unit conversion, and data can be grouped by month, quarter, or year. Charts can be exported as JPG or PNG images on any plan. PDF table exports are available from the Pro plan onward.

No installation or setup is required — you can access the data from any device with an internet connection.

Can I download data as a spreadsheet file?

Monthly Downloadable Spreadsheets are available exclusively on the Ultimate plan. Each month, ready-to-use spreadsheet files covering your subscribed countries are uploaded to your user area so you always have access to the latest data without any integration setup.

To download them, log in at intratec.us, navigate to Your Products, and download the current spreadsheet files directly.

This feature is separate from the Excel Add-In (which retrieves data on demand via templates). Downloadable Spreadsheets are pre-built files updated on the monthly release cycle — a convenient option for users who prefer working with static exports rather than live integrations.

Starter, Pro, and Advanced plan subscribers do not have access to this feature.

Can I view data as maps or side-by-side charts?

Industry Economics Worldwide includes two dedicated multi-country views: Comparative Map and Comparative Chart.

Comparative Map displays data across countries on a geographic map, giving you an at-a-glance picture of regional differences in utility costs, construction indexes, or location factors.

Comparative Chart places multiple countries side by side in a single chart, making it straightforward to benchmark specific data series against one another for a selected time period.

Both views are available through the Online Charts interface and are included on all plans. They complement the standard Historical and Forecast views, which display time series for individual countries.

Can I view the data in different currencies?

Currency conversion is available on all plans. In the Online Charts interface, you can switch the display currency for any data series directly from the chart customization panel — options include EUR, JPY, GBP, and other major currencies.

When using the Excel Add-In (Advanced and Ultimate), you can set a preferred currency for each assessment in your templates. The available currencies for each series are listed in the assessment info sheets inside the Add-In.

For API users, currency selection is supported for IEW Utilities (industrial utility prices and costs). Currency selection is not available via the API for Plant Construction Cost Indexes or Plant Location Factors, which are expressed in index or ratio terms rather than monetary units.

Can I change the unit of measure for utilities?

Unit conversion for industrial utility costs is available on all plans. In the Online Charts interface, you can switch the unit of measure for any utility series from the chart customization panel — for example, switching between GJ, MMBtu, or other energy units depending on the utility type.

When using the Excel Add-In (Advanced and Ultimate), you can specify the desired unit for each assessment in your templates. The available units for each series are listed in the assessment info sheets inside the Add-In.

For API users, unit selection is supported for IEW Utilities only. It is not available for Plant Construction Cost Indexes or Plant Location Factors, which are dimensionless index or factor values rather than physical quantities.

Connecting to External Tools

Is there an Excel add-in for Industry Economics?

The Excel Add-In is available on Advanced and Ultimate plans and lets you retrieve the latest IEW data directly inside Microsoft Excel with a single button click.

The Add-In integrates with your existing spreadsheet models — no restructuring is required. It works on both Windows and Mac (Excel version 16.0 or later) and supports multiple devices, so any team member with the developer credentials can use it.

Data is organized using templates, each of which can hold up to 40 assessment codes covering utilities costs, construction indexes, and location factors. You select the assessments you want, configure preferred currency and unit settings (where applicable), and click Get Series Values to populate the template with current data. Connection modes (Enabled, Test, Disabled) let you validate your setup without consuming data requests.

The Add-In uses a ribbon interface rather than cell-level functions and does not push data in the background — retrieval is user-initiated, giving you full control over request usage.

The Excel Add-In is included at no additional cost with the Advanced plan.

Can I connect this data to Power BI?

Power BI integration is available on Advanced and Ultimate plans. Pre-configured .pbix project files are provided so you can start enriching your dashboards immediately — no setup is required.

To get started, assign the Developer role to a user in your subscription, then follow the IEW-specific Power BI setup guide. A courtesy account is included for testing the dashboards before connecting to your actual subscription data.

The .pbix files are open-source and fully customizable: you can modify Power Queries to adjust data retrieval and build dashboards tailored to your reporting needs. All historical data available under your plan is accessible through the integration.

Power BI access is included at no additional cost with the Advanced plan.

Is there an API for Industry Economics Worldwide?

A REST Web API is available on Advanced and Ultimate plans for programmatic access to IEW data — utility costs, construction indexes, and location factors.

The API returns JSON responses and is compatible with popular programming languages including JavaScript, Python, Ruby, C#, PHP, Go, and R. It also integrates with workflow automation tools such as Microsoft Logic Apps, N8N, and Zapier, making it straightforward to incorporate IEW data into ERP systems or internal pipelines.

Access is structured around a developer role: the subscription owner assigns the Developer role to a designated user, who authenticates with the API to retrieve data. The API provides access to the same assessments available through the online charts.

The API is included at no additional cost with the Advanced plan.

Is there a monthly limit on how much data I can retrieve?

Data retrieval via the Excel Add-In, Power BI, and API is subject to a monthly limit per country. The same pool is shared across all three methods combined.

How limits are structured:

Plan Request Limit (per country / month) API Users
Advanced (Standard) 10 (included) 1
Advanced (Extended add-on) 50 1
Advanced (Premium add-on) 500 1
Ultimate 500+ Up to 20

Key rules:

  • Limits are per country, not per data series or utility type.
  • The limit is non-cumulative — unused requests do not carry over to the next month.
  • Requests are not interchangeable between countries — each country has its own allowance.
  • Excel Add-In, Power BI, and API requests all draw from the same monthly pool.
  • The limit resets when new data is published (i.e., on the monthly release day, not a fixed calendar date).

Sandbox requests and informational operations (such as querying available series metadata) do not count toward the monthly limit.

To increase your limit, you can add an Extra Automation Package at any time via Subscriptions Billing > Upgrade Plan in your account.
